Hot Summer Minis

Hot Summer Minis

"Saturday Morning on Barricane"--  8 x 6 in - Gouache

It’s almost the weekend and it’s hot and sunny, that means one thing….. beach time!
Early morning sun worshippers getting into their groove down on Barricane Beach.

Gouache mini 8 x 6 inches

"Sandcastle Builders"-- 8 x 8 in - Gouache

“Sandcastle Builders” oblivious to the world around them, totally engrossed in their tower building toils.
I love watching the children play on the beach. They get so consumed by their play, totally living in the present moment. Maybe a good lesson for us to absorb?

Gouache mini 8 x 6 inches

Also available;

"Sundown Serenade"

"Curries and Couples"

Warm on the coast today, stay cool and enjoy the day.
Best wishes as always,

Are you getting that Spring feeling?

Do you get that pleasant feeling when the calendar flips over to the first of March? It's starting to get lighter and brighter every day and the creative wellspring is rising. I'm itching to get outdoors and paint again.
It feels like I'm ready to burst with ideas and places to paint this year. Winter has a habit of doing that to a creative soul, which is one of the positives of being cabin bound for a good few months.

I hope you get some of that Spring feeling today!

"You wouldn't believe me if I told you....!" - A day in the life of an artist.

"Summer Morning , Lee Bay" watercolour 12 x 9 inches. available here.

As an artist that likes to paint outdoors, sometimes you get the occasional curious passerby. It's all part of the experience. It's fun to share a few moments with someone who is interested in what you are doing.
I have to tell you that on this blissfully, peaceful Summer morning in a remote bay on the North Devon coastline, Paul Kenton and I were deep into our paintings when the silence was shattered by a four wheel drive SUV that screamed by, stopped, then reversed at speed to stop feet away from us. Out leapt a middle-aged woman, kitted out in high heel stilettos, leopard skin leggings, a sequinned top and a fur jacket, full make-up and hair pomped up high. Who then spoke at one hundred miles in an hour in an accent that was hard to make out, but definitely not English, for at least fifteen minutes, all the while snapping away furiously with her iPhone as we painted.  Then she jumped back into her monster truck , blew us a few kisses and wheel spun off.

All in a sleepy morning's work in North Devon.

"Spearfisher under Mackerel Skies"- Painting the outdoors with passion!

Sitting on the beach today, I felt like just soaking up the day and letting something pop into my head to paint, I had no real preconceptions of what I wanted. The one thing I was after was just a sense of the moment down on Barricane. It was a beautifully calm , warm afternoon with just a hint of cloudy mackerel skies building up. I had a quick swim in the sea to cool me down, a spot of lunch from the beach cafe and then I was ready.
I was just about to start painting a group of beach picnicking mums, when this colourful fellow strode purposefully down the beach. My moment was complete.

"Keeping up with the news" -watercolours on Woolacombe Beach.

Derek's diggers are busy preparing the sand base for the beach huts to go up on next week. Soon they will be a maze of windbreaks and Deckchairs all vying for a secluded spot of beachside real estate.
I love this time of year! I'm excited to get down on the beach for some plain air painting. Here's to a good Summer.

"The Golden Hour"- the power of sunsets- watercolour

"The Golden Hour" when everything in the world feels right for a short while.
There is something about that time of day that just pushes a memory wipe button , which puts me into a blissful warm zone forgetting about everything whilst it happens. Then as soon as that sun sinks below , ......Booom! everything switches back on. Maybe it's just me?

"Feeling Warm"- watercolour painting on the beach.

Well didn't that just feel like Spring? Conor Wilson gave me the pleasure of his company today, so we spent a joyously warm afternoon, painting down on Barricane Beach. Whilst Conor painted the scenery, I was captivated by a bunch of friends and their children chatting and playing in the early warmth.

Splashy Sunday Slider- watercolour surfer

Our old friend the wind returned to groom us with it's presence today, whilst the huge surf looked spectacular with it's exaggerated rooster trails of spray, it was a day for studio painting. I thought I'd try a Splashy Slider on the Hahnemule panoramic watercolour paper. What do you think, does the extended width benefit the composition?

"Slide on!" - watercolour surfing.

I'm really enjoying painting these new SplashySliders, using the watercolour pigment and a mop style brush feels loose and fluid, a natural medium for trying to convey the elusive element of stylish surfing.

The sun's come out! "SplashySlider #2" watercolour

Well these new style "SplashySliders" are starting to have a strange voodoo thing going on. It was cloudy and raining when I started painting this one , then halfway through, the sun came out and now it's wall to wall blue skies! Maybe I should keep on painting these, what do you think? Maybe if I paint enough of them, it might go offshore and glassy too!
"SplashySlider #2" 12 x 9 framed.

"Beach Strolling" Twelve Bays of Christmas 6/12

Early morning walks on the beach are a special luxury. It doesn't take long for that peaceful silence to be broken. The light too is golden for a short while before the sun climbs high and bleaches everything out with strong sunshine.

Have a great day!
