"The Warmth of The Sun" - Spring's coming!

What a joy to have three days of warm, sunny weather , groomed by a southerly wind that started out from Spain. Spirits lift, limbs move with a bit more bounce and the creative pool gets filled up with gorgeous light and strong shadows.

One of my favourite things about living right on the coast, is the smell of gorse when it is in flower. A warm, heady scent of coconut and honey, with a bit of musk thrown in. Delightful!

Are you getting that Spring feeling?

Do you get that pleasant feeling when the calendar flips over to the first of March? It's starting to get lighter and brighter every day and the creative wellspring is rising. I'm itching to get outdoors and paint again.
It feels like I'm ready to burst with ideas and places to paint this year. Winter has a habit of doing that to a creative soul, which is one of the positives of being cabin bound for a good few months.

I hope you get some of that Spring feeling today!

Early Morning Calm - the journey of a watercolour painting

A question that is often asked is "how do you get your inspiration?".
For me it can be simply walking or driving out and about with open eyes just taking in scenes and almost daydreaming at them until something takes my fancy.

Then I usually make a pen sketch , which gets loosely and lightly embellished with watercolour washes.

After that I like to paint a brush sketch for my colour notes, without using any drawing, to get that lovely, loose feel that often eludes a finished piece.
Then I take these back to the studio and work on the composition, with as light a drawing as possible and some design tweaks. Then I apply a few light washes to get the light colours and tones down, making sure to leave my "saved" whites of just the paper, before applying more layers and finally my juicy darks to bring it all to life.

"Beach Strolling" Twelve Bays of Christmas 6/12

Early morning walks on the beach are a special luxury. It doesn't take long for that peaceful silence to be broken. The light too is golden for a short while before the sun climbs high and bleaches everything out with strong sunshine.

"The 12 Bays of Christmas " watercolours 1/2/3

Okay, so here are the first three watercolours in the "12 Bays of Christmas" series.

Number one is "Sea Pinks" , painted from one of my regular spots, I walk this stretch of coastline every day with my little dog and we always stop to take in that day's particular spectacle.This day's special mood was just the stillness and tranquility of the moment, framed by the stunning display of Sea Pinks, just beautiful !

Number 2 is "Fresh Sea Air" . Some days when the Northerly winds blow down the air just gets so crisp and clear , this was such a day. Looking over Morte point from Black Cloud Hill, just stunning!

Number 3 is titled "Summer Sizzler" and is one of those flag cracking days at Woolacombe Beach, the daisies are in full bloom and the sand is hot and the sea refreshingly cool.

"Waiting for the tide, Watermouth Cove" watercolour painting.

I must have driven by this spot so many times and said to myself, "I have to go back and paint there!" So, I finally did. It's a beautiful little natural harbour on the North Devon Coast between Ilfracombe and Lynmouth.
It's my second painting for the upcoming RNLI fundraiser art exhibition October 25-27.

"A rest after gigging all day." - Win a free one off print of this painting!

Can you imagine yourself on this beach? Just the calm, lapping sound of the high tide washing across the sand. Warm sun on your back after a day's rowing on the smooth sea. The Ilfracombe Ladies Pilot Gig Rowing Club, provided me with the inspiration for this watercolour and very grateful I am indeed for it. I hope you enjoy it to! Secluded Cove

Painted this from the lawns of The Watersmeet Hotel in Woolacombe, Devon.  Monday afternoon and this young couple had the little beach and warm sunshine to themselves. The joys of early Summer.

You can book a one or two day painting course with me whilst staying at the Watersmeet Hotel. It has some of the best views in the country, nestled above this cove, with the Atlantic Ocean stretching out below it. Couple that with fine dining and luxurious comfort and you're well on the way to feeling refreshed.

Exmoor Gold

Just a short walk from The National Trust's Exmoor Bunkhouse, takes you up onto the hill behind, revealing a stunning view south out over the moors.

The sun was just setting and the task in hand was to capture the soft light bathing the valley below. The hit of golden yellow from the Gorse that is full flower now, gave a great highlight and complementary colour  note to the rest of the composition.

If you take a walk along the stunning North coast of Devon between Ilfracombe and Woolacombe, you will come across many a scene like this one. Trees perched way up high on precarious outcrops of rock, seemingly watching out over the sea.
this one was standing majestic on the west side of Lee Bay.

Combesgate High Tide

This morning saw a really big, Spring Tide in the bay. Light that with some warm Spring sunshine and you have pretty much a perfect start to the day. Combesgate was full and glassy, with the Watersmeet Hotel and neighbouring houses, snoozing in the early light. Just a joy !

If you walk up to the top of the hill behind the Watersmeet Hotel, you get this stunning overview of Woolacombe Bay. Sat up in the old quarry there, you really feel like you are sat on top of the world. The
view goes off over Baggy Point to the Hartland Peninsula in the distance.

This was painted on one of those days when March starts to give signs that Spring is on it's way.
The sun was warm, the sea had taken on a more greeny turquoise, and the new shoots of foliage were starting to pop their heads up between the russet browns of the old ferns.

A beautiful day out on the North Devon coast , looking along the cliffs to the old Coastguard Cottages, near Ilfracombe.

Lee Bay, North Devon, is a truly beautiful spot. Green wooded hills roll down to the sea, with cottages built right onto the shoreline. Great rock formations and pine trees balanced on clifftops. This the view looking East from yesterdays "Sentinel of the Bay " painting.
