Are you getting that Spring feeling?

Do you get that pleasant feeling when the calendar flips over to the first of March? It's starting to get lighter and brighter every day and the creative wellspring is rising. I'm itching to get outdoors and paint again.
It feels like I'm ready to burst with ideas and places to paint this year. Winter has a habit of doing that to a creative soul, which is one of the positives of being cabin bound for a good few months.

I hope you get some of that Spring feeling today!

"Beach Strolling" Twelve Bays of Christmas 6/12

Early morning walks on the beach are a special luxury. It doesn't take long for that peaceful silence to be broken. The light too is golden for a short while before the sun climbs high and bleaches everything out with strong sunshine.

Have a great day!

"Honeymoon" oil painting step by step with Steve PP.

Had a busy week breaking out the oil paints again after a spell of design work on the computer over the last month.
This was a commission from a new collector. So, I thought that I would share a few stages of it's process with you. First was a call to the friendly team over at Fine Art Canvases, based here in North Devon, they make the most beautiful, high quality custom canvases. I'm not kidding when I say that these are the best that I have ever painted on. The build quality is superb, with solid timber frames connected with an adjustable allen key system, just brilliant!
First came a primer undercoat of a pale crimson was laid on to lift the warmth of the finished light effect, a request from the collector to give an overall feel of pinks and purples.

Next came the light sky colours, ultramarine blue, titanium white, alizarin crimson and a tiny amount of phthalocyanine green.

After the sky, I concentrated on the greys and dominant colours in the sea, agin, a combination of ultramarine blue, a.crimson and t.white, mixing in small amounts of the sky mixes to keep a harmony throughout.

Adding more pinks to the grey mixed from a.crimson, cad red light, t.white and cad yellow pale, gave a glow to the reflected light on the sea, not forgetting to add some to the sky.
A good juicy dark mix of u.blue , a.crimson and p.green was added to give weight and definition to the waves and then reflected light was added onto that from all corners of the palette to finish off the highlights.

By now , you can work out that I have a pretty limited palette, really just those five or six colours can give you a wealth of mixes. A couple of blues , a couple of reds a yellow and white will serve you well.
I use Sansodor low odour solvent to clean up with and Liquin to thin the oil down and speed up the drying time of the thin layers. W&N Griffin Alkyd Quick Drying Oils are also a bonus as they let you work on thin dry layers a day later. I was pleased with the finished painting and happily so were the new collectors. The cost of this painting was spread out over a few months to help with the purchase, so if you were thinking of purchasing a painting or commissioning one, I am always happy to spread payments out to make this possible and affordable! just get in touch and we can have a chat about it. You can see more  of my work and all of my available and latest paintings on my Fine Art website here.
Well, it was great to get messy with the oils again, but the stink from them is hard to live with now that the Winter is setting in and opening the studio windows and doors is not always possible, so I think it will be back to the watercolours for a while.
Have a great day!

"Peaceful Spring Morning"- plein air watercolour painting on the coast.

"Peaceful Spring Morning" Barricane Beach, Woolacombe, Devon. Watercolour on rough paper 12 x 9 inches.
Getting up and out early , more often than not has it's rewards, beautiful light, peace and quiet and an empty beach. This lucky fisherman got all of those this morning, he truly looked at peace with his lot as he went about setting his bait and casting out, then patiently sitting and waiting for a bite.
Spring truly has sprung! You can see the final painting on my Fine Art website here.

Enjoy your Spring day!

Tunnels Beaches

© Steve PP

How is it that you can live somewhere for years and not have visited somewhere on your doorstep that just blows you away? That happened to me this week when I visited Tunnels Beaches in Ilfracombe. Like an Aladdin's cave that opens out onto secluded pleasures is the feeling you get there. It's steeped in history too! Take a trip and enjoy, it will make your day!
Oil on canvas 100cm x 50cm

" Summer "

24 x 9 inches watercolour on paper.
With the run of inclement weather that our little island has been subject too, it was great to sit in the warm, dry surroundings of my studio and paint up a theme that's dear to a lot of us, hot, sunny days on the beach. This one is on it's way to a customer in Australia.

Hemingway's Retreat- plein air with Paul Kenton

Yesterday , with a break in the weather, I seized the chance to go painting with Paul Kenton, we both shoehorned in a couple of hours into our daily schedule, and hooked up at a beautiful spot overlooking Woolacombe Bay. I painted this study in oils on a 12" x 5" wood panel , whilst Paul went big on a pre-stretched sheet of watercolour paper. It was a great exercise in working at speed, just capturing the essence of what was infront of us , without putting in too much detail.

" Tip Time 2 " from iPad to easel

" here's the acrylic painting on wooden panel, that i worked up from the initial two studies on the iPad. It really helped having the flexibility to work a few colour options out digitally before commiting the design to paint. Have a creative day!"

" Lazy Afternoon " - almost painting out in the sunshine

9 x 6 inches oil on canvas panel. £400

"I was so enthusiastic about getting to the beach today to paint in this beautiful warm sunshine, that only after I had scouted out my spot , set everything up, squeezed out my paint, ordered a tea , worked out where to start, did I realise that I left my white paint at the studio! - Doh!! So, this little study was done from memory back in the studio. Funnily enough, before heading out, I was reading Kevin MacPherson's excellent book " Inside and Out " and he mentioned trying out an exercise where you studied a scene outdoors without a sketchbook or camera, then went back to your studio and painted it from memory. I thought that was an excellent idea, and one that I would do one day, i didn't quite expect to be practicing it half an hour later. Kevin was right though, it's amazing how much you remember, try it out sometime?"

"Misty Morn" A Cornish Shrimper

20 x 20 inches Oil on canvas Sold.
" Misty Morn" is a beautiful little Cornish shrimper plying it's lines along the South Devon coastline.
I really enjoyed tackling a different subject matter, sometimes it makes you take stock of what you think you know, and it really helps tighten up your observation skills.

Secluded Cove

6 x6 inches oil on panel

Painted this from the lawns of The Watersmeet Hotel in Woolacombe, Devon.  Monday afternoon and this young couple had the little beach and warm sunshine to themselves. The joys of early Summer.
You can book a one or two day painting course with me whilst staying at the Watersmeet Hotel. It has some of the best views in the country, nestled above this cove, with the Atlantic Ocean stretching out below it. Couple that with fine dining and luxurious comfort and you're well on the way to feeling refreshed.
